Fire safety & Escape route signage is mandatory and is a vital part of any evacuation plan, which should have a formal review, carried out annually, by a competent person.

Escape Route System Design:

  • An escape route signage system should ensure that from any place within a building… a directional sign (or series of signs) is provided
  • Signs should be placed so that a person moving within the means of escape is progressed towards a final exit
  • All signage systems should be clear so that they minimise the risk of confusion

An escape route system within a building should address several needs including:

  • The result of the Fire Risk Assessment (link to Fire Risk Assessments) determining the adequacy of the means of escape provision
  • The requirements of enforcing authorities
  • The use of the premises and the degree of familiarity of the occupants within the premises
  • The management system controlling use of the premises (i.e. public access, security etc)
  • The evacuation strategy for the premises
